ELEMENTAL: Abstractions for Unsettled Times, curated by Meredith Anderson and Ginger Myhaver at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck brings together the work of six established artists from Gloucester and greater Essex County, all working within distinct traditions of minimalist abstraction, using elemental materials, basic geometric shapes and spare application of color. Mary Bucci McCoy, Helen Duncan, Seth Goldfine, Ann Ledy, Joe Lovasco, and Constance Vallis each engage a rigorous artmaking practice and mastery of materials to develop precise forms and finely-honed surfaces, negative spaces and shadows. Far from cold formalist exercises, their works exude human presence, warmth, spirituality, danger, heart, grief, hope and wit.
