I make art because I love to paint,” Dennis says. “Once I start painting, I can feel it coming out of my body and mind. I’ve always felt that if I have an idea, I can paint that idea as long as I let myself be free with color and lines.
— Dennis Flavin

50 Years of Color showcases Gloucester artist Dennis Flavin’s evolution as an artist. The colorful and energetic paintings range from his true-to-life portraits of the 1970s, to his psychedelic still-lifes and seascapes of the ’80s and ’90s, to his increasingly abstract work of the past quarter-century. Although Flavin has shown pieces from time to time, this exhibition will be the public’s first opportunity to see the full range of his artistic career.

Flavin’s vast catalog includes oils, pastels, and mixed media, as well as copper plate etchings. He has lived and worked in Gloucester for the better part of five decades. Locals know him as the charismatic owner of the Halibut Point Restaurant on Main Street, which he opened in 1982 and ran until just a few years ago.
